Judge Dredd is a clone of Chief Judge Fargo, the founder of the justice system. He graduated from the Justice academy in 2079 on the honour roll after acing every test and sticking rigidly to the rules. When his skill was noticed, he was made a a street Judge and after 20 years, Dredd became Mega-City One's top and most feared lawman.

Judge Dredd frequently appears in his usual street judge uniform. Perhaps his most defining feature is that fact that he rarely removes his helmet, the comics have never revealed his face. In Programme #8, he removes his helmet but his face is covered by a black censored bar. The lawbreakers present react as though he is horribly disfigured. Later on he uses a face changing machine to fool some lawbreaker on Luna-1 into thinking he is one of them, he is seen as a different person with his helmet.

Dredd is usually drawn with a slim build but is seen to be muscular. In the Last episode of the Cursed Earth saga, Dredd's muscular build can be seen when his sleeves were torn off.

He often appears to have a clean shaven face with a distinct chin biscuit. So distinctive, infact, that a whole town of genetic relatives to Dredd shared the same trait. Dredd's lower face is the only part of his skin that is clearly visible, Dredd's chin had to be drawn more distinctive so that he could be identified easily from other male judges. Early drawings showed Dredd with larger lips, this was to mask his ethnic origin, but as new artists were drawn in this feature was abandoned.

A typical street Judge uniform consists of:

• Black trousers with gold shin guard and knee plates.
• Black leather boots with gold metal plating.
• Golden belt with a golden eagle of justice on with several utility pockets. The comic book design of the belt sports a belt with an eagle embossed in red,white and blue stars and stripes.
• Black jacket with the zip slightly to the right of the centre, a gold chain is linked to the zip and badge on the judges left breast.
• The left shoulder pad is also gold with grooves pointing down the arm.
• The judges elbow pads also mimic this design.
• The right shoulder pad showcases another golden eagle of justice.
• A holster that holds the iconic 'Lawgiver' judge weapon.
• A judges gloves are often seen as being black, large and padded, often portayed to include protection around the knuckles.
• A street judge's iconic helmet is black with a red border around the visor. Although the helmet covers the ears and back of the head it has an a distinct 'cut-out' for the lower face. The helmet has an inbuilt visor that covers the judges eyes. The helmet features an emblem of 5 golden vertical lines below one gold horizontal line.
• The badge of a judge is the same as the emblem on his forehead topped with the eagle of justice. The Judge's surname (except in some instances of Rico where his first name is present) was engraved diagonally across the emblem.

Dredd is unforgiving when it comes to the law and rarely makes exceptions, even arresting his own robot and house keeper. He is often uncaring but has shown some glimmers of consideration with regards to his closest companions. He is quite laconic, only speaking to Judge people or to deliver an appropriate one liner. Dredd does not hesitate when 'judging' perpetrators, often executing criminals after on the spot sentencing. Being a such a respected and feared judge, Dredd's persona could even be described as robotic.

Dredd is an expert in both hand to hand combat and is extremely ept in armed combat, experience in dishing out punishment has earned him the nickname 'the Dead Man', matching his cold persona.
